What is the weather like in Sri Lanka in July?

In July, Sri Lanka sees warm, tropical temperatures usually around 27°C to 30°C (81°F to 86°F). On the southwest coast, it is in monsoon mode, with lots of rain, and the northern and eastern areas enjoy dry, sunny weather.

July feels like a month with stark regional swings, almost like two different climates. The Yala monsoon tends to bring heavy showers and rough water around Colombo, Galle, and the southern beaches, so ocean swimming can be unsafe there. At the same time, it is actually peak visitor season along the East Coast, including Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, and Passikudah, where it is hot, dry, and well-suited for water sports, surfing, and whale watching. Up in the Cultural Triangle in the north central plains, conditions stay mostly dry too, yet the central Hill Country, for example, Nuwara Eliya, runs cooler and often gets mist along with brief passing showers.
